Spectacular Sycamore Canyon

Saturday May 1st, 2010. I love our road trips when Grandma Gail is visiting. Trevor is the best too!
Waking up Saturday morning in our Caboose.

Pine Country Restaurant for breakfast in Williams, AZ. This local favorite, across from the Grand Canyon Railway Depot, serves up homemade pies and country cooking.

We drove on a Forest Road, passing through ponderosa pine and Gambel oak into pinon-juniper country as we approached Sycamore Canyon. The road lead us right to the rim of the canyon, called "Little Grand Canyon" for good reason. The elevation at the canyon's edge was 7,000 feet, but it dropped to 3,600 feet at the bottom. It's a mile wide and extends for 20-some scenic miles. The maze of rocky chasms and red rock formations resembles Oak Creek Canyon, it's better-known neighbor, except this is a designated wilderness and has no roads, and relatively few hikers.

The stout steel bridge over the Verde River near Perkinsville is one-lane.

Dinner at a local favorite in Jerome. Mellow deck views, a good bar, and hearty grilled fare at the Haunted Hamburger.
